50 Years of Smucker Family Hospitality
Our Smucker Family’s successful experiment with hospitality began in 1968 when we built a motel in the pasture of our Bird-in-Hand farm. Guests soon found our 30-room Bird-in-Hand Motor Inn along the historic Old Philadelphia Pike where they enjoyed wide-open spaces and views of farming country. Two years later we opened the Bird-in-Hand Motor Inn Restaurant next to the motel to offer Pennsylvania Dutch foods that were, according to our slogan in 1970, “Home Cooking at its Best!”
Discover the Bird-in-Hand Story

Then & Now
Life has changed a lot in the last 50 years. Let’s take a look at 1968 versus 2018.
Our yearlong celebration features a display of artifacts and a historical timeline in the lobby of our family restaurant & smorgasbord. A community hymn sing and ice cream social, original menu items, a limited edition shoofly pie artisan ice cream, a 50th anniversary cookbook, and collectibles are all a part of commemorating our special year.
Check out our 50th Anniversary menu, a nostalgic nod to our original menu design from 1968
