Find Out What “Fresh Food” Really Means
Long before people started talking about “farm-to-fork,” the Smucker family was bringing food from the land to the table. We’ve enjoyed homemade goodness at our table for generations. Today, we share that great taste with you.
At our Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord and Bird-in-Hand Bakery & Cafe, our menus feature fresh meats, fruits and vegetables from several local Lancaster County farms. Many of these farms are located within minutes of our restaurants. Most of our meats, poultry and eggs come from Lancaster County producers, including Angus beef from John Smucker’s farm. We use fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables from local Amish and Mennonite farms – in season, you can purchase fresh produce from them, too. We grow our own pumpkins for our pumpkin pie, and our cage-free eggs come from Smucker Farms, a local, family-owned and operated farm. The milk we serve with our baked oatmeal and apple dumplings comes from Oasis, an Amish organic, non-GMO co-op.
We support farmers who share our commitment to food quality and safety. We think it’s good for the community and a sustainable approach for the land. And you can’t beat the farm-fresh taste!
Meet the Farmer
Clair Kauffman, Kauffman’s Fruit Farm & Market
3097 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, PA
Kauffman’s provides us with apples, including sliced apples, and peaches for our pies, baked goods and artisan ice cream.“We have about 100 acres, and only 80 to 90 acres in production at any given time. We grow apples, peaches, pears, plums and cherries. With smaller scale production, you can have more optimal harvest times. That always results in a better flavor and higher nutrition because the fruit is at optimal maturity. People tell us, ‘Your fruit just tastes better.’ To me, fruit flavor is an indicator of nutrition and proper management.

Enjoy Our Bounty
The first bite brings back mouth-watering memories: fresh-picked produce… hearty, homemade soups, artisan breads… juicy Angus beef raised on the Smucker farm. The Smucker family knows good food. We have been growing and preparing our own for eight generations, and we have been feeding visitors to our part of Lancaster County since 1970, when we opened our first Bird-in-Hand restaurant. Today, guests return time after time to our Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord and our Bird-in-Hand Bakery & Cafe. Our offerings range from Pennsylvania Dutch recipes like chicken corn soup, ham balls with pineapple sauce and chicken pot pie to handcrafted sandwiches on homemade bread to specialty cakes and artisan ice cream. We make most of what we serve on our premises from local produce, meats, dairy and other farm-fresh ingredients – and you can taste the difference.
