Make & Take: Needle-felted Sheep

Create a whimsical critter using wool fiber and a felting needle

Try your hand at the popular art of needle felting under the guidance of Lancaster-based fiber artist Dot Rineer of Woolies. Designed for adult beginners, this hands-on workshop will cover the craft’s basic tools and techniques, including using a barbed needle and a cookie cutter to shape your creation. You’ll go home with a sweet little sheep sculpted from wool.

Dot Rineer took her first class in needle felting at the Lancaster Quilt Museum in 2004. The art is believed to have evolved from wet felting in Central Asia thousands of years ago. It became popular in the 1980s when two American fiber artists adapted industrial felting needles for artistic purposes. Today, Dot uses the technique to create whimsical creatures and characters out of wool—usually sheep or alpaca—with hand-sewn embellishments.

Class size is limited, so reserve your space soon. There are two sessions starting at 10 a.m. and noon. All supplies are available, but guests are encouraged to bring a sharp pair of small embroidery scissors if they have one.

$35 per person includes instruction and all material for one 4-inch sheep.

This class is for adults only.
